WHAT IS BUSINESS PSYCHOLOGY?

Much like the phrase implies, business psychology is an evidence-based science that investigates how to help businesses and their people be more effective together.

According to the Association of Business Psychology, “it combines an understanding of the science of human behavior with experience of the world of work to attain effective and sustainable performance for both individuals and organizations.”

As an applied science, business psychology can help businesses improve their practices to leverage the skills of their people while helping their people engage with the objectives of the organization. It explores how people and workplaces align their often-competing goals to create healthy and productive environments that increase engagement and drive profits.

While most business psychologists focus on “between person” outcomes (why Jane is more productive than Bob), my expertise lies mainly in understanding “within person” outcomes – why Jane is productive on Monday, not as much on Tuesday but excels on Thursday.

Taking a primarily within-person approach is unique in business psychology and is ideal for small to medium sized companies. An employee’s ability to self-manage their mindset and behaviors is paramount as SMEs rarely have access to the depth and breadth of management, HR and learning opportunities usually available in much larger organizations. Individual performance is also important to the success of SMEs as underachievement is more noticeable in smaller working environments.

Though not limited to these, within-person Business Psychology covers:

  • Short- and long-term workplace performance

  • Goal achievement

  • Employee engagement

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Stress and anxiety management

  • Leadership

  • Decision-making abilities

  • Effective communication

  • Psychological wellbeing and mental health

  • Memory improvement

  • Influencing and sales skills

  • Productivity and effectiveness

  • Reasoning and critical thinking

  • Leadership

  • Resilience and adaptability

  • Personal mindset and skillset development and more.

Put simply, business psychology helps business people and profits grow.
