Research shows that we switch from looking at email to other types of work at least 70 times a day. That number is a stark reminder that mismanaging this tool can significantly effect our productivity.
Multi-tasking doesn’t work. Your brain can’t do two high-end functions at the same time. Sure, it can flip back and forth very quickly but there is always a moment of downtime as we switch.
And more importantly, that incessant flipping around has proven to be cognitively exhausting, even to the brains of young professionals who grew up hooked on computers.
Action – A general rule for email is to work on it 5 – 10 minutes per hour or 30 minutes 3 times a day. Turn off the tone that signals new emails unless you’re expecting something urgent.
Small changes will make a big difference and your brain will thank you for it!
