Working full-time from my home office is fabulous! But the joys of this type of freedom can also be marred by the same challenges people in big offices face.
And one of the biggest is interruptions. But how could I have interruptions if there is no one around?
Someone or some thing is only an interruption if we allow it to take our attention.
Now, there are many practical ways to avoid or deflect interruptions, but until you understand the basic principle that you can control them, and in fact must, all the tips and tricks I could give you would be a waste of time.
Yes, people are going to knock on your door, step into your workspace or call at really inopportune moments. And yes, it can sometimes be difficult when the boss, a client or a pushy colleague shows up unannounced.
So…..
Action – Step 1 for handling these situations is to remember that you, by choice, see them as either annoying interruptions or as simply part of the job, just like getting your paycheck.
Step 2 is deciding which of the many specific systems and tools you will use to minimize any negative impact you experience when interrupted.
Once you have both these steps figures out, you will rarely be interrupted again!
