I really sucked as a manager the first time out! It was only when I embraced my own fears and thoughts of inferiority that I was finally able to learn the attitudes and actions of managing a team well.
But it was a long process. And my own boss stood by me the whole way. He guided me, trusted my decisions and let me learn. He praised me even when I didn’t praise myself.
And that is one of the key pieces of being wonderful leader… giving someone a great reputation to live up to, literally.
By treating me as if I was already a good manager, he helped me become one. And eventually, some of my own staff moved up the corporate ladder too because I treated them that way.
Action – Someone in your circle of colleagues, clients, or friends deserves a better reputation than what they’ve got now.
Help them achieve their potential by treating them better than they treat themselves.
