“Start from where you are going.” That phrase significantly impacted my business and how successful I have become starting way back in 2001.
I had heard the phrase before, but never got my head around what it really meant until I happened to glance down at my schedule system on day. Everything was all over the place – client meetings here, admin stuff there – no consistency or rhythm at all.
It looked like the schedule of a start up business trying to impress everyone. That is not how I wanted to manage my business over the long run.
So, I sat back and envisioned how my business might look in 5 years. “I am meeting clients 2 days a week, marketing one full day, customer service and admin another and then a lovely 3 day weekend. I am working in a particular way, have particular systems and hang out with particular people.”
I knew where I was going even though I wasn’t there just yet, so I started acting and working as if I was. I imagined the attitudes and actions of my successful self 5 years ahead.
Within weeks, my client numbers were up, systems were sleeker and my professional circle was expanding!
Action – Where do you want to be in 5 years, or even 2. Start acting and thinking that way right now and you will literally start each day from where you are going.
