You’ve been told your entire team must conform to new regulations, procedures and objectives.

I can see your jaw dropping as you read, because you know, don’t you, that it just won’t work that way!

Change initiatives only succeed if the entire team or organization is completely engaged with the outcome. If goals are imposed from the top instead of driven up from the bottom, they risk severe resistance or even sabotage.

So, if you know all this, then why do you try to change the behaviors of your team? Adults hate being told what to do. People want to influence their environment and be valued for what they give. Take those things away and you risk mutiny.

Action – Next time you set goals with each member of your team, get out of their way. Give them space to create their own contribution. Your job is to guide their ideas into the bigger picture, which is much easier than hammering away at a concrete wall!
