As someone who studies the psychology of success, I’m often asked to share insights about how to influence others. While there are many interesting methods for encouraging and persuading, there is only one technique I know that works for both the buyer AND the seller.

Truth.

Telling the truth creates the best opportunity for creating a sale.

Obviously it’s necessary for the buyer to tell the truth about their challenge, budget, expectations and so on, but for now I want to focus on you, the seller.

Truth-telling builds trust and safety for the buyer, along with confidence and integrity for you.

Action – Don’t withhold truth. Don’t exaggerate, baffle or embellish. If you don’t have an answer, admit it. If your product or service doesn’t benefit the buyer, refer them elsewhere. Be transparent with the pros and cons, be open and approachable.

People seek out truth, which is one of the most powerful and attractive influencers there is.

(If you are thinking this article should be longer than it is because of the subject matter – influence – you have unfortunately learned that persuasion is supposed to be complicated. In actual fact, it is nothing more than what I have written here. If you believe otherwise, please leave your comments on this posting.)
