How many times have you felt an elephant in the room? You know the feeling I’m talking about … that sense that something is being glossed over, not said, avoided.

Perhaps you remember sitting in a meeting where your team talked about all the goals it was going to meet this fiscal year. But you knew, like everyone else, that the team wasn’t cohesive and motivation would not match outcomes.

To get rid of the elephant sitting in a room, someone has got to find the courage to say what’s what, otherwise it is a complete waste of time, energy and money. Yes, sometimes one person’s fact is another’s fantasy, but as Aldous Huxley said – facts do not cease to exist simply because they are ignored.

Action – Next time you feel the elephant in the room, will you have the courage to speak up? If not, why not? What fears will stop you? And what actions can you take to manage those fears?
