An office culture of criticism can lead to perfectionism. And perfectionism is the ultimate killer of success.
Yes, that’s right – a killer.
Perfectionist stay focused on failure (i.e. avoiding it), and whatever you focus on consumes your attention.
And success, which always comes from innovation and adaptability, can never be created in an inflexible environment of criticism and fear.
All of us contribute to office culture, not just the management or leadership. So each of us can help to shift our own office to an affirming and accepting atmosphere by learning how to make constructive comments, both positive or negative.
Action – If someone is dissatisfied with their own performance, simply ask them what they would do next time. Find out what they need in order to do it the way they would like and empathize with their challenges without getting caught up in a pity party.
Offer praise for all efforts, even if they seem to fall short. Help the person identify the attitudes and actions that worked well. And avoid giving material rewards for achievement. Instead, publicly acknowledge how much people’s contributions are valued.
Real world success is not about getting everything right but on learning how to handle things that go wrong.
