Many managers are fabulous at doing their work but rotten at managing people. This is because rising through the ranks teaches you how to execute on the paperwork or handle external vendors but not some of the nuances of leading and inspiring your team.
Here are some of the fundamental points to remember if you’re a manager:
People look to you for direction, a sense of security, encouragement despite mistakes and moral guidance. They want respect and trust and someone to believe in them and to help them achieve their goals.
Most importantly, they want to be heard and valued.
As you can see, being a great manager has to do with them, not you!
Action – If you do not feel you can manage well, either proactively learn the skills and attitudes of a superior manager, or don’t take the position in the first place.
Because if you cannot lead without ego, everyone will be miserable, including you!
