Part of my research into the psychology of success has included theories of sport psychology. Not surprisingly, the parallel journey of the athlete and the business professional is fascinating.
In fact, many professionals are envious of the tenacity and determination of the high-level athlete.
How can someone work daily for months or even years on end, often focused on just one day’s sporting event? What motivational skills or drive does an athlete have that a professional can copy?
Several, but the first and most important maxim an athlete follows is the one inscribed on the ancient Greek Temple of Apollo – Know Thyself.
A successful athlete develops more than just physical prowess. Self-awareness is key to help someone identify growth areas for skill as well as psychological strengths and weaknesses. An athlete can win or lose if they make their mind up that way!
With self-knowledge comes self-control. With self-control comes focus, determination and decisiveness.
Action – What do you need to do to develop your self-awareness? What can you start doing differently today to understand yourself?
Champions have self-awareness and self-control. So can you.
