Emotional intelligence is a key quality in a great leader. While IQ will often get you through the door, acquiring EQ – emotional intelligence – can get you promoted.
EQ is your ability to manage your own emotions as well as being aware of the emotions felt by those around you.
Leaders or those in customer service or sales who can recognize and support the emotions of themselves and others around them are influential and inspirational. EQ encompasses aspects like self-regard, social responsibility, stress tolerance and assertiveness, all of which can be learned.
Action – While there are good EQ books out there, the best teacher on emotional intelligence is you. By getting involved in interactions with others and then noticing your range of emotions throughout, you will increase your EQ, and your interpersonal skills.
