Moving – whether home or office – can be a big chore and extremely stressful. I know from first-hand experience how exhausting it is to pack things up and move.
The most trying move I ever made was when I returned to Canada after living almost 13 years in Europe. I had to reduce a fully furnished home down to two suitcases, a box, and a cat.
Getting rid of the furniture was easy. But getting rid of over 300 books – now, that was hard!
But the subsequent feeling of relief was both unexpected and quite amazing.
I had been thinking I needed other people’s opinions but the mental space created by not being surrounded by other people’s words gave me the space to find my own!!
Action – I challenge you to toss out or donate 50% of your books, magazines and articles.
Explore what you think. I have no doubt it is very profound!
50% of my books!
Nancy, you could ask me to cut an arm or a leg and that would cause a lesser shock!
Oh, I hear ya, Kurt. But trust me, it is an amazing feeling to come out from behind the wall we build with other people’s words.
I solved this problem when I bought my e-Reader. One device that houses A LOT of books!
This excites me. In my hometown we have an initiative called the Free Library Project – basically its a series of kiosks in public spaces where people can donate books and if they wish, also take a book . I’ll pay them a visit – though I can’t promise I won’t come home with a few new titles to replace the donated stock 🙂
I am in the process of moving now and I am loving getting rid of stuff! It’s so freeing, and I know my things are going to people who need them which makes it even better.
