Moving home and office can be stressful. Having recently done just that, I can give you a first hand and timely reminder of what a chore packing things up can be!
But, having moved almost 40 times in my life, I also know how wonderful it can be too.
The most trying move I ever made was when I returned to Canada after living almost 13 years in Europe. I had to get everything I owned in a fully furnished home decluttered into 2 suitcases, and a box, and a cat.
Interestingly, the furniture part was the easiest. Getting rid of all my books – several hundred of them actually – was by far the hardest part.
After spending hours fussing over what to keep and what to let go of, I managed to have just 30 books left.
The subsequent feeling of relief was both unexpected and quite amazing. And, considering that was over 5 years ago, it has obviously stuck with me.
You see, I realized that I had spent far too long worrying about what OTHERS thought, thinking that I didn’t know enough. I was looking to those so-called experts (the authors of the books) to tell ME things about MY life.
The mental space created by NOT being surrounded by other people’s words gave me the space to find my own!
Action – I challenge you to toss out or donate 50% of your books, magazines and articles.
Explore what YOU think. I have no doubt it is very profound!
