I used to live in an area many would consider poor by North American standards. Over 40% of the population received some form of benefit, welfare or social assistance.

When asked if they wanted to improve their financial or practical way of life, of course the answer would be a resounding YES. Yet when told that the improvement would mean they would have to take control, assume responsibility and act upon their own goals, most simply said “oh well then, no. Things are OK the way they are”.

You may think I’m talking about some far off land. I’m not. This particular region is actually a financially prosperous first world country. The poverty comes from the apathy of the individuals within the community who choose to wait for the financial fairy godmother to drop a lottery win, or a big fat check, into their lap.

We are all apathetic sometimes. And that’s the key – we do it “sometimes!”

There are, however, many folks who bitch and complain today, tomorrow and the next day yet do nothing about it. There are many so-called reasons, none of which really stand up to close scrutiny.

Action – What have you turned away from, simply out of apathy? What do you feign indifference to yet actually care for? What dream have you let go because of false excuses? Who are you waiting for to come make it all better?

Take responsibility now, and make all the difference yourself.
