Many people are terrified of speaking in public. Whether it’s to a small group or a large crowd, the idea of getting in front of an audience can stop some people in their tracks.
This means that, for some, they are limiting their career or financial future.
As a speaker myself, I can understand their trepidation. Over the years, I have spoken to thousands, and that doesn’t include my radio and television appearances. I still get a little nervous now, but it’s a healthy jitter in my stomach that keeps me sharp and focused on the task at hand.
There are tons of books and courses out there to help someone overcome their fears. But two of the most important lessons I’ve learned are these –
First, feedback is always about the person giving it, never about me. What someone says may be constructive criticism I can use and it is also an insight into who they are and what is important to them.
And second, no matter how big my audience, the only eyes that really matter are the ones looking back at me in the mirror, and so everything I say is signed with my integrity. I believe wholeheartedly in what I say.
Action – When you get these 2 lessons mastered, you will never again experience that gut-wrenching fear that keeps you from public speaking.
