I’m going to let you in on a secret that will help you recharge your batteries.

Taking short pauses throughout the day has been proven to be a simple yet effective tool for refreshing your mind and body. I call these ‘mental health moments’.

But few of us take them. We waste time looking for external things to help us refocus.

Instead, all we need to do is …. nothing.

Pausing for as little as one minute every hour is all it takes. As a result, your heart rate will drop, blood will be redirected to your brain, your muscles will relax, and that internal chatter of yours will calm down.

Action – Set an alarm for 60 minutes and when it beeps, pause all your activities – except, of course, driving – and take in 10 deep breaths.

Stop thinking or doing for just one minute every hour and you’ll be amazed by the results.

  1. Good advice, but for me (not everyone is the same) I take 5 every 90, push back from the desk, walk around the office, stretch, then sit down and take a moment of mental silence, not thinking of anything…then back to work.

    1. That’s great too, Richard. As long as we are taking these little breaks every 1 to 2 hours, and doing so in a way that is right for us.

Personally, I often take 3-5 minutes every 60-75 minutes (depending on what I’m doing) to wander and breath, sometimes stretch, sometimes just stare out the window.
