Excellence in a task is far more important than perfection.
I recently came across an anonymous quote I think nicely sums up the difference between excellence and perfection.
Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise; risking more than others think is safe; dreaming more than others think is practical and expecting more than others think is possible.
To me, the quote means a couple of things.
First, excellence occurs when we step outside our perceived limits; when we walk, even slightly, into the space of opportunity that always lies just beyond our current reality.
And second, excellence involves internal risk, care, belief, imagination and expectation. It can continue to grow as we do. Perfection, however, is limited to that one so-called ideal outcome which is always unattainable.
Action – Focus your attitudes and actions on excellence. And leave the unreachable alone.
The search for perfection will only bring you down. Excellence, on the other hand, will push you to go beyond expectations and pull others up while you’re at it. Thanks for this reminder, Nancy.
You are most welcome, Olivia 🙂
I completely agree. Perfection feels terrifying but excellence is a level that is achievable with hard work and perserverance.
I completely agree the point!
🙂
very insightful!
I love this quote – and wish it was me who said it! hehehe
What a great quote! Noting it down.
It is one of my favorite – I’m glad you like it too Belinda!
Excellent Nancy!
I had never thought on that side.
Thanks!
I’m glad you like it Camila!
Hi Nancy, I am so enjoying these. Thank you!
You are most welcome.
I have this quote on my desk and above it is a picture of an eagle in flight – I love it! I’m trying to remember to read it every morning as I begin my day.
It’s one of my favorite quotes. Really refocuses and centers!
Thanks Nancy!
I love that quote. Another one that I have used to try to talk myself off the perfection ledge is “perfect is the enemy of good”.
Very true. I had a prospect meeting yesterday and the client said his CEO’s philosophy is “Get Better before Getting Bigger” which is in conflict with most of their competition which is to get bigger then get better. Your message today is in lockstep with this prospect.
Thank you Nancy. Like starting my day being challenge with your posts.
Thanks! Love it! Today’s entire message is suitable for framing
Thank you Nancy. This is really hitting home for me. Great way to start the day!!
