The key to managing interruptions is to remember that they’re not all created equal. If your colleagues keep interrupting you, it’s time to establish some boundaries.

Action – And the best way to do that is to classify the type of interruptions that are permissible.

Class A interruptions are for those problems or issues that you MUST be involved in. These are the ONLY type of interruption you will tolerate.

Class B are those things that only need a yes or no or a 10-second reply.

Class C questions are those that could go to someone else in the office. Encourage your colleagues to seek input from others.

And Class D issues are those that could be resolved if people simply access policies, documents, the internet or the company website. Let people know that you do not want to be bothered by these types of questions at all.

Remember though, this system will only be effective if you apply it consistently and fairly.
