People frequently ask me – Nancy, how do I stay motivated every day?

Well, this new random series of postings will share specific tips and techniques to help you stay upbeat and engaged.

There are a number of psychological theories to explain motivation, like drive, needs pursuit, self-actualization and so on. But you don’t need to know all these.

What you DO need to know is that the feeling of motivation is the culmination of a thought process. The way you interpret a situation, discuss it with yourself and then decide your position, determines whether you are motivated or not.

You CAN influence that processing and there are many different ways to do that. Some of the strategies I will share with you over the coming weeks will work for you and some won’t because we all have our own individual make-up of personality, learning styles, history and narratives.

Action – Start by listing what you know motivates you. Could be money, numbers, reputation, a need to please, fears, pride or all of these. Don’t worry if what you say is right or wrong for the rest of the world. At this point, simply be honest with yourself.

You may choose to evolve these – or not – in future. For now, just acknowledge what exists.

As you come to understand your motivators, you’ll be able to leverage them to suit your goals.
