A smile came to my face the other day as I read the words of humorist Jerome K. Jerome:-
I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours!!
It is difficult sometimes to do what we have to do. Maybe we don’t know what to do next. Or we procrastinate because the task is unpleasant or because we think it’s unrelated or irrelevant.
But, sometimes, it really doesn’t matter why. Sometimes, it is best simply to honor it.
(Yes, you read right – honor it!)
But you must also make a commitment to complete the work. So instead of looking at work for “hours”, I permit myself “one hour”. And then the work gets done after that hour has passed.
Action – So rather than berating yourself for avoiding a certain task, allow your procrastination. Then, when the time you’ve allotted is done, follow up on your commitment and get the work finished!
Occasionally I allow myself the guilty pleasure of a computer card game or mahjong just to break up the day. I’m also surprised how many times an idea occurs to me mid-game. I often emerge from the game with a mini to-do list. I heartily recommend it!
True. Tasks will go from “I hate to do” to “I Love to do” and that too without any pre-assumptions and reservations. Honor the tasks coming on our way makes difference ..
Sometimes we procrastinate because a task is too daunting and we don’t know where to start. Breaking it into ‘bite-size’ pieces is a good strategy and also remembering we don’t have to see the whole stairway, just the first step.
