Developmental psychologists have found that, on average, infants will make 294 separate attempts to walk before those first few steps are taken. This research reinforces some pretty important facts – facts we adults have often forgotten.
First, desire and perseverance are two of the qualities behind a child’s obvious tenacity. In fact, we’re born with them.
Second, babies have not yet learned the words “can’t” or “too hard.” Nobody has warned them their butts might hurt or people may giggle!
Third, their results are cumulative and they patiently build on previous learning.
Action – Today, re-engage with a goal you’re procrastinating about. Put aside your concerns of failing or falling. Persevere through the possible problems and learn from every step along the way.
After all, you’ve done it before.
This is one of the best things Nancy ever reminded me of! I say “reminded” because I think most of us never realize we have the ability to persist and overcome programmed into to us from birth. It is truly part of human nature.
I like this post so much I listened to it twice. Thanks Nancy, this puts everything into perspective!
