Yes, technology has allowed people to make more choices about how and where they work. It’s a mistake, however, to think that mobile working decreases stress by increasing flexibility.

People buy technology on the promise that it will make work/life balance simpler. But technology never creates balance and it’s not required for balance.

How many times have you felt that you had to check emails or make calls during evenings, weekends or holidays? Was it because you could or because you thought you had to do what everyone else was doing?

If you feel you had to, it’s not a choice and it’s absolutely not balanced. Balance occurs when you choose your actions.

Action – Yes, use the technology you have access to. Gadgets can plug you in 24/7, but only if they are turned on. Choose to shut them off more often.

  1. Could not agree more! When I made the choice to mute my phone every evening at 8pm and unmute it an hour after I got up, life became less stressful and the dearly beloved felt like a priority again. On weekends, I may turn it off completely depending upon my schedule. It’s like a vacation day in the truest sense.
