Goal setting is both an art and a science. And yet it is something easy to learn. Here’s a key element you need to have in each Goal Statement that you create.
Well, actually, I will share this strategy using an old quote. You may have seen this or one like it before. But if you are struggling to achieve those goals of yours, it’s quite likely you’ve not been paying attention to it. Here we go…
“Goals are simply dreams with a deadline.”
Yup! That’s right – “simply dreams with a deadline.”
Without a deadline, it is not a goal – its just part of your wishlist. And it is entirely up to you to set that deadline for your goal.
Too often, we say our goals in a way that is fluffy or abstract. We say things like “when I have X, then I’ll have Y” or “I’ll do that next month”.
Neither of these statements are goals. They do not encourage your subconscious to take action on the goal, nor do they reinforce any level of motivation, accountability or commitment.
Action – Make yours concrete, a real target, a date by which you will get your goal. And you will immediately start noticing a more positive, energized approach to the actions you must take to make the goal happen.
Be specific and state a date. A real date, like February 5, 2007. Or December 15, 2010. Or even next Monday. But state a date!
