More and more job hunters are using social media to find new work. Using tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook are definitely helping people establish an online presence that prospective employers are using to investigate their candidacy.
These online tools will never replace door knocking, job applications and face to face meetings but adding the social media dimension to your repertoire may be an important factor to the HR guy who is checking you out.
Another online activity not often mentioned in the job seach arena is blogging. But I’m not talking about your own blog, although that is also an option.
By getting active on blog sites related to your industry, you can easily and quite visibly display your knowledge and expertise.
Action – Find 5 good reputable blogs written by those in your field or even the blogs written by companies you’re interested in working with. When appropriate, add comments, insights, links and your own opinions and experiences.
Then you can refer others to your entries as a way for them to get to know you, start a conversation or further the interview process.
Adding to another person’s blog is an under-used but highly effective way to publicly demonstrate your skills.
