Do you know how to ask for what you want at work? It’s important, because even if you are not a decision-maker, you can still indicate your preferences with confidence.

Many people don’t realize that some of the communication skills they use with family and friends are just as effective professionally. For example, you no doubt influence which restaurant to go to or which house to buy.

For various reasons, at work we feel we have fewer rights so we don’t speak up for what we want. Yes, others WILL make many of the decisions and you may sometimes feel your input has not been heard or valued.

But there WILL be times when your comments and requests ARE important to a final choice.

Action – If you’re still not sure HOW to ask for what you want, try using this phrase:

“I would like to do X. How does that sit with you?”

It is short, respectful, non-demanding and open – the best way to articulate anything.
