Wow, things have been hectic recently! And in my business business – public speaking, writing, training – things have to flow with some consistency.
But certain times can be slower than others. However, over the last few years, even the slow times seem awfully fast!
This is where I have learned a great lesson. And it’s one that has helped me handle huge amounts of activity with very little feeling of overwhelm.
Now, I concentrate on the PACE of my work, not the volume of it.
Before, when I would look around a desk that was covered in tasks and projects, somewhere in the back of my mind, I was counting the things that weren’t yet done. As the number climbed, the dread climbed too. I asked myself “how am I going to manage 5 new projects, 7 outstanding ones and the daily running of my business.” I would get frustrated and angry.
These days, I’m focused more on the pace of my activities. I can easily choose a fast or slow tempo. Sometimes I work full out for several hours or even days. In the middle of it all, I might throw in a bit less activity and slow it down. Or, vice versa!
I’m not counting how many things are ticked off the list – just maintaining a cadence, a rhythm, whatever I choose that to be.
Action – What results might you create if you just focused on pace?
I’m probably ticking off more than ever before, but simply don’t notice it as much. Yet there is a consistent feeling of achievement and success simply because my primary focus is on pace, not on volume.
