60 seconds.

In my syndicated one-minute daily audio program, that is all the time I have to capture someone’s attention and get my message across.

Yet, researchers say that 60 seconds is 100 times longer than most of us take to make a first impression and 10 times longer than most of us take to glance at a webpage before deciding whether to stay or go.

How many times have you listened to someone ramble on about something when you notice your mind is wandering away, wondering what to have for lunch or when you can schedule your next hair cut? And if you’re doing that, what are your listeners doing? They might be checking out too.

Action – So, when speaking, ask yourself this question – “and your point is?” You see, it’s the same question your listener is asking.

Think about the impact you want to have on your listener and the answer you come up with will guide you to being concise, relevant and heard!

  1. This is absolutely one of my favorite photos too! I also appreciate the reminder that people listening to me want me to get to the point as quickly as I want them to!
