Like many women, I enjoy my two-hour pampering session at the hair salon every other month. A hair salon has its own culture that you can only understand if you experience it.
A pillar of this culture is conversation and I love to listen to the stories that fly around the place. Similar to infrequent psychotherapy, this ‘bare all’ tradition allows people to tell their deepest, darkest secrets in a safe place.
The chance to share our stories is essential to our own mental health. It’s an opportunity to vent or reflect, often just for the sake of it. No solutions or fixing – just empathy, laughter and mutual commiseration with people who don’t have a vested interest in what we do.
What safe and anonymous outlet do you have for this style of communication? Maybe you need to head to your hairstylist or barber.
