Monks know more about effective communication than anything you will ever read in one of those professional development books.
Fortunately, I can teach you everything they know in less than 150 words.
Every time a monk is going to say or write something, it must pass this 3 question test:
- Is it true?
- Is it kind?
- Is it necessary?
If the answer to any of these is No, it doesn’t get communicated.
Period. End of story.
Too simple you think? Try explaining that to a monastic group that has been around for 2000+ years.
Action – Today, every time you want to share some information, gossip or give feedback of any kind, ask yourself these 3 questions before you open your mouth.
- Is it true?
- Is it kind?
- Is it necessary?
If any of your answers are No, keep … your … mouth … shut!
