My husband says he has a bad memory, particularly when it comes to remembering dates or household tasks. But if you ask him something about his work, though, he can recite chapter and verse of pretty much every detail!
This is, of course, no surprise. [Sorry honey, but for the benefit of my readers, it’s gotta be said! ]
Very few of us actually have a bad memory. What we have is bad recall!
We remember what’s important to us. And that’s because we fundamentally choose to focus on things that we personally define as significant or emotionally relevant. Not necessarily what’s important to the spouse or boss or kids or whatever, but to us as individuals.
Action – When encoding something into our memory, we are more likely to be able to recall it in future if we make that piece of information important or emotional.
Failing that, an old catchphrase works great too – if it’s written down, you can look it up.
Just ask my husband!
