The words we speak have incredible power to affect how successful we are. And the language we use in everyday conversation helps to determine our success.
How we use the word “why” provides a perfect example.
Unlike “why” used by children, “why” used by adults often indicates something negative.
When you ask questions like these…
Why did you do that?
Why don’t I make as much as Bob?
Why can’t I do better?
… your mind will attempt to answer the question in the same framework that it was asked. So, if you ask a “why” question, your mind usually goes to work looking for a negative response.
Action – So ask questions that encourage the brain to find solutions rather than excuses. Begin questions with when, what or how. When can I have that meeting? How can I finish this task quickly? What can I get off my list today?
Empower yourself with solutions, not excuses.
