Many people complain about having a bad memory. Whether in business or your personal life, forgetting someone’s name, misplacing information or items and losing your train of thought can slow down what it is you are trying to achieve.
While a blog space isn’t really sufficient to go into a deep conversation about the memory’s encoding, retention and recall functions, I can share with you some quick tips for boosting your memory.
Action – Do puzzles. Simply doing crosswords, Sudoku or word search puzzles for a few minutes every day can definitely impact your brain function. Instead of reaching for a business report or magazine article, grab a puzzle and fire up the brain cells.
Follow the guidelines for healthy living, such as eating well and getting lots of sleep. In fact, research shows that getting a good night’s sleep right after learning helps to consolidate your memories. And a hearty breakfast sets up your physiology for performance.
Don’t try to cram information in at the last minute. Learn, let it sit for a while and then review it later. Cramming doesn’t work, period.
And most importantly, whenever you learn something new, teach it to someone else. The act of recalling and rewording the information from your perspective deepens the connection you make to your learning.
