Even though you often feel overworked and overwhelmed, parts of your brain are bored!

You see, rates of depression are higher now than for our grandparents and great-grandparents. Yet their lives in comparison could be considered much harder.

Ironically, their daily lives, which were often characterized by trials for sheer survival, provided them with activities some psychologists believe lead to better mental health.

We are specifically wired to anticipate and execute complex motor functions. Yet, you and I enjoy the pleasure of conveniences everywhere. We no longer enjoy the mental rewards for completing physical tasks.

Action – This week, stop using at least one of your little gadgets and gizmos. Turn the TV channel by hand, stop using the microwave or bread maker, and use a hammer instead of the electric nailgun.

Give those underused and forgotten parts of your brain a workout.
