Fear stops us from taking action. There are many fears, like the fear of failure or success or getting found out or looking like a fool, and so on.
One fear I see often is the fear of upsetting others which, of course, is really a fear of rejection. This is why we have difficulty saying NO to others.
More often than not, the fear is much bigger than any consequence of taking the action, and you know that. But the worst case scenario still keeps you stuck.
Action – Challenge that illusion. Ask ‘what’s the worst thing that can happen?’
Be honest – what is REALLY the worst thing? If you were to disagree with your boss, is the worst case scenario REALLY being fired?
Maybe it is, so now that you’ve frightened the heck outta yourself, PREPARE for the worst case scenario. Whether that is emotionally or practically, prepare for it. Start looking at the potential in the marketplace for a new position, have your resume up to date, keep your options open. This is preparation for the worst case scenario, however unlikely it really is.
Now, work to improve on the worst. How can you limit that outcome? Could you approach the boss in a different way, perhaps have allies if the situation calls for it, or even learn a new way of communicating your desired results. Can you improve your attitude, confidence or overall mental outlook?
At the end of the day, what is REALLY the worst case scenario? Whatever it is, prepare for it. Then improve on it.
Fear is often nothing more than an illusion created by your imagination. Don’t let that stop you.
