Multi-tasking is not as efficient as you might think. In fact, multi-tasking – or switching back and forth between different tasks – DECREASES productivity.
Despite notions to the contrary, the brain cannot actually do 2 things at the same time. Every time you switch your attention from one thing to another, there is a process your brain must go through.
It must first decide to switch, then disengage from the current activity and THEN your attention must engage with the new task. Though fast, it is NOT instantaneous and, undoubtedly, you end up asking “what needs to happen next?”
Action – So, instead of trying to multi-task, stay focused on what you are doing. Defer interruptions, let the phone ring and learn how to say “no, not right now.” Create a system to quickly capture random thoughts and keep your desk clear of distractions.
